President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has transmitted a constitutional amendment bill to the House of Representatives seeking legal backing for the establishment of state police services as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.
In a letter to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, the president forwarded the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (State Police) Bill, 2026 for legislative consideration.
Tinubu said the proposed amendment would provide the constitutional framework for state police and builds on previous work already carried out by the House on the issue.
He added that the bill includes safeguards to ensure an effective and balanced dual policing system.
Describing the proposal as a key part of his administration’s security reforms, the president urged lawmakers to give the bill speedy consideration and approval.
