Katsina and Kano States are intensifying efforts to contain outbreaks of diphtheria, with the disease now reported in 29 local government areas of Katsina State, according to a report2 by Punch.

Health authorities are stepping up surveillance and response measures as concerns grow over the spread of the infectious disease.

In Katsina, the outbreak has continued to widen, with suspected cases recorded across nearly half of the state’s local government areas. Authorities are working to identify affected persons, provide treatment and prevent further transmission within communities.

Meanwhile, Kano State has confirmed two deaths linked to the outbreak, prompting the state government to establish a special committee to investigate the cases and coordinate measures to contain the disease, particularly in Rano Local Government Area.

The development has renewed calls for increased public health vigilance, early detection and treatment, as well as vaccination against diphtheria. Health officials are expected to strengthen contact tracing and community awareness efforts to prevent the outbreak from spreading further.
