The Nigerian military’s new salary structure will raise the monthly pay of personnel across different ranks, with generals set to earn up to N3.25 million while privates will receive N187,200.
The new pay structure, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will take effect from September 1, 2026, according to the presidency.
The increases range from 30 per cent to 80 per cent, depending on the rank of the personnel.
About 250,000 personnel of the Armed Forces are expected to benefit from the new salary package.
The adjustment will also increase the annual wage bill for the Armed Forces from N660 billion to N924 billion, according to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Under the new structure, officers above the rank of colonel will receive a 30 per cent salary increase. The category covers brigadier-generals, major-generals, lieutenant-generals and generals.
Personnel from colonel down to warrant officer will receive a 50 per cent increase.
Meanwhile, privates to staff sergeants will receive the highest increase of 80 per cent.
The adjustment comes after the Defence Minister, Christopher Musa, disclosed last month that the Tinubu administration had increased the minimum monthly salary of soldiers from N49,000 to N100,000.
The latest increase is expected to further raise the earnings of military personnel across the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy and Nigerian Air Force.
