Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to investigate an alleged military airstrike in Zamfara State that reportedly killed at least 100 civilians.

The strike allegedly hit Tumfa market in Zurmi Local Government Area in northwestern Nigeria on Sunday.

According to Amnesty International, military aircraft were first seen over the weekly market around midday before returning about two hours later to carry out the bombing.

The group said dozens of injured victims are being treated in nearby Zurmi and Shinkafi. Witnesses reported that many of those killed were women and girls.

Amnesty also referenced a similar incident in April near Nigeria’s Yobe–Borno border, where more than 100 civilians were reportedly killed during a military operation targeting a local market.

The organization said the incidents raise concerns about civilian safety during counterinsurgency operations in rural communities affected by armed violence.

Amnesty International urged Nigerian authorities to conduct a transparent investigation and ensure greater protection for civilians during military operations.
