No fewer than 30 people are feared dead after a canoe carrying dozens of passengers capsized in Adiyani village, Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State. The victims were reportedly travelling across the river when the accident occurred, throwing passengers into the water.

According to reports, at least 16 bodies have so far been recovered, while several passengers were rescued alive.

However, many others remain missing as local divers, emergency responders, and community volunteers continue search-and-rescue operations.

Authorities said the victims were returning from their daily activities when the canoe overturned.

The exact cause of the mishap is still under investigation, although boat accidents are often linked to overloading, poor maintenance, and the absence of life jackets.

The tragic incident has left families and residents of the affected community in mourning.

Officials have pledged to continue rescue efforts and urged operators and passengers to comply with water safety regulations to help prevent similar disasters in the future.
