Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has been rearrested by operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, moments after his release from Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja.

The rearrest occurred on Monday, January 19, 2026, shortly after Malami fulfilled bail conditions granted by the Federal High Court in an N8.7 billion money-laundering case filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Video footage from the prison gate shows Malami questioning the identity of the operatives before he was escorted into a waiting vehicle believed to belong to the DSS.

Security sources say the new detention is linked to fresh allegations bordering on terrorism financing and illegal possession of arms, following the alleged recovery of weapons during EFCC searches at his residence in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.

Neither the DSS nor Malami’s legal team has issued an official statement on the rearrest, as legal and political attention continues to focus on the expanding investigations involving the former justice minister.
