Christian stakeholders in Niger State have called on Governor Mohammed Umar Bago and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to ensure greater political inclusion ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The coalition said Christians have suffered years of marginalization and warned against presenting another Muslim-Muslim governorship ticket.
The group, led by Jonathan Vatsa, argued that Christians make up a significant portion of the state’s population and deserve fair representation in government.
It alleged that many qualified Christian politicians were sidelined during previous party primaries and that the imbalance has continued in political appointments.
The stakeholders urged Governor Bago to nominate a Christian as the APC’s deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 election, saying such a decision would promote fairness, strengthen unity, and reassure Christian supporters within the party. They warned that failure to address their concerns could trigger protest votes against the APC.
The coalition maintained that its demand is not intended to create division but to encourage equity and inclusiveness in the state’s political system.
It called on the APC leadership to act promptly, insisting that equal representation would help foster peaceful coexistence and improve the party’s chances in the 2027 elections.
