Nigeria has recorded its first tele-robotic surgery, with a surgeon remotely operating on a kidney cancer patient in Abuja from Mowe, Ogun State, approximately 500 kilometres away.
The procedure, known as a robot-assisted right radical nephrectomy, involved removing a kidney affected by a cancerous tumour.
The operation was carried out by Redeemer’s Health Village in collaboration with RoboMed Global, with the patient receiving treatment at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja.
Using a Toumai robotic console in Ogun State, the surgeon controlled the surgical equipment in real time, demonstrating the potential of remote technology in specialised healthcare.
The development marks a milestone in Nigeria’s medical technology sector and could expand access to specialist surgical care for patients in different parts of the country.
