A Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled May 15, 2026, for the hearing of a suit challenging the eligibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The case was filed by a lawyer, Johnmary Jideobi, who is seeking a court order to bar Jonathan from running.
The plaintiff argues that Jonathan is constitutionally disqualified, claiming he has already served the maximum allowed tenure after completing the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s term and later winning the 2011 election.
Jonathan’s legal team has opposed the suit, urging the court to dismiss it on the grounds that similar issues have been previously decided by competent courts. They maintain that the case has no legal basis.
The matter was previously delayed due to procedural issues involving some parties in the case, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Attorney-General of the Federation.
The upcoming hearing is expected to draw significant political attention as discussions around the 2027 general elections intensify across the country.
