Suspected fighters from the jihadist group Boko Haram launched an overnight attack on a military facility in Damboa, Borno State, northeastern Nigeria, early Monday, according to security officials.
Local media reported that the attackers stormed the 25 Task Force Brigade camp at about 12:50 a.m. in Damboa Local Government Area.
The assault occurred less than 30 minutes after suspected militants from Boko Haram and its rival faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), reportedly carried out attacks around Ajilari Cross and nearby neighborhoods in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
Police said security forces prevented the militants from breaching the community.
The spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, Nahum Daso, confirmed the incident, saying a joint team of security operatives repelled the attackers at about 1:00 a.m.
Daso did not provide the exact location of the attempted incursion within the Damboa area.
As of the time of reporting, further details including possible casualties had not been released.
However, residents told reporters they heard sporadic gunfire near a military base in the local government area during the early hours of Monday.
The latest attack comes roughly two weeks after militants raided and burned a military base in Ngoshe, also in Borno State, killing civilians and abducting more than 300 residents.
