Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appealed to the leadership of the 10th Senate to amend the constitution to allow the creation of State Police.
He made the request during an interfaith breakfast with senators at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday.
The President stressed that State Police are crucial to addressing evolving security challenges, improving grassroots policing, and enabling states to respond swiftly to threats within their jurisdictions.
He described a decentralized policing system as a complement to the federal security structure, emphasizing intelligence-led and community-focused law enforcement.
President Tinubu praised the cordial relationship between the executive and the Senate, highlighting the need for unity to defeat terrorism and banditry. He also thanked lawmakers for supporting his administration’s economic reforms, including fuel subsidy removal and tax policy reforms.
