Gunmen attacked Gwana community in Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State northeast Nigeria killing two soldiers and abducting several residents as Muslims prepared to break their fast on Sunday evening.
Police public relation officer of the Bauchi command SP Nafi’u Habibu confirmed the attack to Explorer, saying that the attackers entered the town from the outskirts shortly before iftar and opened fire noting that a member of the local vigilante group was also shot during the assault.
“They came just before we broke our fast and started shooting,” a resident said. “They killed two soldiers, shot a vigilante member, and abducted four women and one man. A young boy in our neighbourhood was also shot dead.”
Many families fled the community after the attack, fearing further violence.
The resident described it as the first incident of its kind in the town, although he noted that unfamiliar faces had been seen in the area in recent days.
SP Nafi’u said authorities are assessing the situation and verifying the number of casualties and abducted persons. He added that further details would be made public after investigations are concluded.
