Electoral Act controversy: Senate to hold emergency plenary Tuesday

Nigeria's Sanate President, Godswill Akpadio

The decision was announced on Sunday in a statement issued by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, who said all senators had been summoned to attend the sitting.

According to the statement, Akpabio directed the reconvening of plenary to address urgent legislative matters.

The emergency session comes amid controversy surrounding the Senate’s rejection of a proposed amendment to the Electoral Act seeking to make real-time electronic transmission of election results mandatory.

The development has sparked widespread criticism, with allegations that the Senate President announced a decision that did not reflect the position agreed upon by the majority of senators.

Recall that the upper chamber had adjourned plenary for two weeks last Wednesday after passing the Electoral Act amendment bill, to enable lawmakers engage heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the defence of their 2026 budget proposals.
