Health authorities in Jigawa State, northern Nigeria, say more than 1.5 million children will be vaccinated as part of a nationwide polio immunisation campaign scheduled from March 28 to April 2, 2026.
Officials say the success of the campaign depends on the cooperation of parents and care-givers, urging families to make children available for vaccination teams.
The exercise will combine house-to-house visits and fixed vaccination points, alongside mop-up activities, with a target of reaching more than 95 percent of eligible children.
UNICEF says the campaign is part of ongoing efforts across selected Nigerian states to eliminate remaining traces of the polio virus and prevent its return among children under five.
Although Nigeria was declared free of wild polio virus in 2018, health experts including the World Health Organization, stress that sustained immunisation is critical to keeping the country polio-free.
