Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, says the government has no immediate plans to increase electricity tariffs, assuring consumers that efforts are focused on stabilising the country’s power sector.
Speaking in Abuja during a briefing marking his first 100 days in office, Tegbe said the government was prioritising improved electricity supply, financial discipline and stronger sector governance.
The minister identified vandalised transmission infrastructure, ageing equipment, inadequate metering and estimated billing as major challenges. He said electricity distribution companies continue to record losses of between 30 and 40 per cent.
Tegbe reported that electricity generation and transmission had exceeded 5,000 megawatts in recent weeks, reaching a peak of 5,330MW. He also announced the restoration of the 375MW Alaoji power plant after three years of inactivity.
According to the minister, more than 300 containers of transmission equipment have been released from ports, while solar and mini-grid projects across 30 states have delivered 43.6MW and 41,735 new connections.
He added that 350,000 electricity meters were installed within 100 days, bringing the cumulative figure to more than one million as of August, alongside 90,000 meters installed in military formations.
