Nigeria has launched a nationwide campaign to enforce a federal ban on the production and sale of alcoholic drinks in sachets and small bottles, a policy aimed at reducing underage drinking and harmful alcohol consumption.
The campaign was flagged off at the headquarters of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Abuja and is being implemented in collaboration with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). Authorities say the initiative will focus on public awareness and behavioural change as enforcement begins across the country.
The Federal Government banned the production and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets and in PET or glass bottles below 200 millilitres, with the directive taking effect on January 1, 2026. Officials say the restriction targets cheap and easily accessible alcohol products that are widely consumed by young people.
NOA Director-General Lanre Issa-Onilu said the decision followed about eight years of consultations with industry stakeholders. NAFDAC Director-General Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye added that findings from a 2021 survey on underage drinking also informed the government’s decision to tighten regulations on alcohol sales.
