The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the end of direct admissions into 100-level and 200-level degree programmes run through Colleges of Education across Nigeria.
The decision is part of reforms aimed at improving transparency and strengthening the admission process in tertiary institutions.
According to JAMB, the new policy will take effect from the 2026/2027 academic session, meaning candidates seeking admission into degree programmes affiliated with universities will no longer be admitted directly through Colleges of Education.
The board explained that the move is intended to curb admission irregularities, ensure compliance with established guidelines, and enhance quality assurance within Nigeria’s higher education system.
Colleges of Education are also expected to focus more on their primary role of training teachers through the National Certificate in Education (NCE) programme.
The development is expected to impact prospective students and institutions nationwide, with stakeholders now looking forward to further details from JAMB on alternative admission pathways and the implementation of the new framework.
