The government of Anambra State in southeastern Nigeria has directed all mortuary owners and operators to register their facilities or renew expired licenses before June 5, as part of a broader public health reform program.
According to the state Ministry of Health, enforcement and inspection exercises will begin immediately after the deadline. Officials say facilities operating without proper authorization could face sanctions under existing health regulations.
Authorities said the measure is intended to improve oversight of mortuary services, update official records, and ensure compliance with public health standards.
Hospitals that operate mortuary units have also been instructed to register those facilities separately.
The move forms part of a wider effort by the state government to strengthen regulation within the healthcare sector and improve monitoring of activities linked to the handling of human remains. Officials say the reforms will also support disease-control measures and public safety.
The announcement comes amid a series of regulatory changes introduced by the Anambra government, including measures aimed at reforming funeral practices and improving public health administration across the state.
