Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring peaceful and secure general elections in 2027.
Tinubu, represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, spoke on Monday at the opening of the sixth Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers in Owerri, Imo State.
He urged the Nigeria Police Force to uphold professionalism, impartiality and intelligence-led operations, pledging continued government support for training, technology and operational logistics.
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu outlined plans to strengthen intelligence gathering, inter-agency coordination, community partnerships and the use of technology during elections.
Disu said police commissioners would identify potential electoral flashpoints and emerging security threats across their commands. He also announced plans to launch a public election complaints line on October 12.
The police chief warned against political violence, voter intimidation and vote-buying, stressing that officers found taking sides or abusing their powers would face disciplinary action.
Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who hosted the conference, commended the police for sustaining the platform for addressing security challenges ahead of the elections.
