Governors elected on the platform of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have rejected any political alliance they say could weaken the party or undermine President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for a second term in the 2027 election.
The chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, announced the position following a closed-door meeting of the governors in Abuja.
The development comes amid reported tensions between Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and some APC governors, including Uzodimma and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
In Imo State, Wike is backing the PDP governorship candidate, while in Kwara, he is supporting Senator Saliu Mustapha in the Kwara Central senatorial race, putting him at odds with political interests aligned with AbdulRazaq.
In a statement after the meeting, Uzodimma said the governors unanimously agreed not to support any political arrangement that could weaken the APC, jeopardise Tinubu’s re-election or undermine the party’s candidates at any level. He said the governors would instead mobilise support for all APC candidates, strengthen grassroots campaigns and promote unity within the party.
