Nigerian and United States forces have carried out joint airstrikes in northeastern Nigeria, killing 21 suspected fighters linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), according to military officials.

The operation targeted militant positions in Borno State, a region that has remained a center of insurgent activity for more than a decade.

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters said the strikes were conducted following intelligence reports that identified the movement and concentration of suspected militants in the Metele area near the Lake Chad Basin.

Military authorities described the operation as part of ongoing efforts to disrupt terrorist networks and destroy safe havens used by armed groups.

The latest action reflects growing security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States as both countries increase pressure on extremist organizations operating across West Africa. Recent joint operations have targeted ISWAP commanders and logistical bases linked to the group.

ISWAP, an affiliate of the Islamic State group, remains one of the most active militant organizations in the Lake Chad region, carrying out attacks against security forces and civilians in Nigeria and neighboring countries.

The insurgency has displaced millions of people and created one of Africa’s longest-running humanitarian crises.
