Authorities in Chad say at least 42 people have been killed and 10 others injured in the country’s east, following violent clashes between two communities.
A dispute initially broke out between two families on Saturday over access to a water well in Igote village, Wadi Fira province, before later morphing into a wider confrontation, officials revealed.
The Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Territorial Administration, Limane Mahamat who led a government delegation to the area said the situation is now under control.
“Upon arrival, the ministerial delegation found the local authorities and mobilized defence and security forces on site to restore order and security in the area,” the Ministry of Territorial Administration said in a post on social media.
Those who sustained injuries are being treated in several health facilities in the province.
Inter-communal clashes are commonplace in Chad, especially between herders and farmers. The country is also grappling with the spillover effects of the war in Sudan, with border localities being hit in drone attacks.
