South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has received the credentials of the new United States ambassador, Brent Bozell, in a move seen as an attempt to stabilise strained ties between the two countries.
Bozell, a conservative media figure and supporter of former US President Donald Trump, assumed office in February but drew attention after making critical remarks about South Africa’s racial policies and judiciary.
At a formal ceremony in Pretoria, the ambassador was welcomed with a guard of honour before presenting his credentials, signalling the official start of his diplomatic mission.
Speaking at the event, Bozell praised South Africa and expressed optimism about strengthening bilateral ties, saying both countries share common values and interests.
Ramaphosa, however, stressed that diplomats must respect national sovereignty and engage through constructive dialogue, warning against public criticism that could undermine relations.
