At least five people have been killed in suspected gang-related violence in Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city, police and residents say.
The clashes took place over the weekend in the Ilemba-Awori and Shibiri areas of Ojo district, where rival groups engaged in violent confrontations.
Witnesses reported gunshots and chaos as armed youths carrying guns and machetes moved through the streets, forcing residents to flee their homes.
The violence reportedly began in the near by Etegbin area, where a young man was shot dead on Friday, and later spread to surrounding communities, with reports of looting and robberies.
Police said 18 suspects have been arrested and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
