The number of confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surpassed 8,000, with 3,901 deaths recorded, according to government data.
The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, has become the largest and deadliest Ebola epidemic recorded in the country.
There are currently no approved vaccines or treatments specifically for the Bundibugyo strain. However, the World Health Organization says trials of three potential vaccines could begin by October or November.
The DRC, with support from the WHO and Doctors Without Borders, has also launched a test vaccination programme to determine whether vaccines developed for another Ebola strain could offer protection against the current outbreak.
Meanwhile, several international partners have announced additional financial support for the DRC’s response to the outbreak, following discussions on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
