A coalition of Nigerian federal workers has threatened to begin an indefinite nationwide strike, citing unresolved wage disputes, unpaid allowances, and worsening economic conditions. The move could disrupt public services if talks with the government fail.
The Federal Workers Forum said members are frustrated by what they describe as the government’s failure to fully implement salary-related commitments linked to a 2024 minimum wage review. Workers argue that promised adjustments and benefits remain outstanding.
The group also expressed concern over the rising cost of living, saying inflation has significantly reduced workers’ purchasing power and increased financial pressure on households across the country.
Beyond economic issues, the workers highlighted growing insecurity in parts of Nigeria, including kidnappings and attacks that have affected communities and public servants. They said many employees now work under increasingly difficult conditions.
The forum urged the government and labour leaders to engage urgently in negotiations to address workers’ concerns and prevent industrial action that could affect government operations nationwide.
